Faux Leather
A synthetic material designed to mimic leather without using animal hide. It is durable, wipeable, and remarkably receptive to print. In the context of mahjong, faux leather transformed the playing surface from a practical necessity into a place where artwork could live.
Vegan Leather
Another name for faux leather. The terminology often reflects philosophy more than chemistry. Some prefer "vegan leather," others "PU leather" or "leatherette." The material itself is less interesting than what is done with it.
Leatherette
An older word with an almost architectural quality. Leatherette refers to a manufactured leather substitute prized for consistency and ease of care. It has long appeared in hospitality, transportation, and interiors. It happens to make an exceptional playing surface.
PU Leather
Polyurethane leather. One of the most common forms of faux leather used in contemporary manufacturing. Stable, printable, and resistant to everyday spills, it has become a natural choice for decorative objects intended to be handled often.
Wool
Long before printed playing surfaces, many mahjong mats were made from wool or wool felt. The material dampened sound, protected the table, and provided just enough friction to keep tiles from sliding without making them difficult to push.
Wool has a warmth that synthetic materials rarely imitate. It softens with age, absorbs light, and carries with it the visual memory of billiard tables, card rooms, libraries, and tailoring.
It is also imperfect. Wool stains easily, stretches over time, holds onto moisture, and is difficult to clean after an evening of food and drinks.
Printed Mahjong Mat
A mahjong mat onto which an image has been reproduced. The difference between decoration and composition is subtle but important. A border can be printed. A logo can be printed. A complete work of art can be printed as well.
Playing Surface
The part of the object most frequently overlooked.
Every game takes place on one.

Edge-to-Edge Printing
A method in which the image extends across the entire surface rather than occupying a central panel. The eye experiences the object as a whole rather than as a background with decoration applied to it.
Original Artwork
Work created specifically for the object it inhabits.
Surface Design
The practice of creating imagery for objects that are touched and lived with rather than framed and hung. Wallpaper, scarves, textiles, ceramics, book cloth, rugs, and mahjong mats all belong to this tradition.
Utility
An object's reason for existing.
Neoprene
Soft. Flexible. Familiar.
Originally developed for entirely different purposes, neoprene entered the world of gaming because it cushions impact and lies flat. It performs well. It simply speaks a different visual language.
Mahjong Mat
A surface on which a game is played.
