Needlepoint, Meet the Mahjong Rack

Needlepoint, Meet the Mahjong Rack

At Tigre de Tartán, we spend an unreasonable amount of time thinking about the objects that live around a game. Not just the tiles and the mat, but the racks, bags, dice, tables and all the other things that eventually become part of the room.

Our latest experiment started with a question: what if the mahjong rack had a needlepoint inset?

We designed a rack that incorporates a piece of needlepoint directly into the object, turning the decorative face of the rack into a place for stitched artwork. Part mahjong rack, part miniature framed needlepoint, and exactly the sort of unnecessary detail we tend to get very excited about.

The first Tigre de Tartán needlepoint racks are now officially in production.

The idea came from our ongoing obsession with bringing traditional decorative arts into objects that are actually meant to be handled, played with and left sitting out. Needlepoint felt particularly right. It has texture, history and humor, and framing it within the rack gives the artwork an entirely new job to do.

There will be more to show soon. For now, consider this our little announcement that Tigre de Tartán's needlepoint-framed mahjong rack is on its way.

Designed by Tigre de Tartán in 2026. Currently in production.
