The American Mahjong guide you’ll actually use at the table.
There are plenty of ways to learn American Mahjong. This is the one we wanted sitting next to us while we play.
Our American Mahjong Play Guide is a comprehensive, beautifully illustrated reference to the game, written by Tigre de Tartán partner Caroline Larew. Caroline brings an unusual combination of brains to the subject: a Stanford MBA, years spent teaching American Mahjong, and, before all of that, a stint in improv theater. The result is a guide that understands both the rules and how to explain them to an actual human being.
Everything is organized to be quickly understood and, more importantly, quickly found again when six people at the table have six different opinions.
Inside you’ll find the full structure of American Mahjong, including how to read the NMJL card, dealing, the Charleston, turn-taking and game flow, calling and exposing tiles, and completing a winning hand.
And then there is the spiral.
The 5" × 7" spiral-bound format lies completely flat, because a reference book that keeps closing itself while you’re trying to play is not particularly useful. Leave it open beside your rack, flip directly to what you need, or tuck it into your mahjong bag when you’re finished.
It’s comprehensive enough to learn from, concise enough to reference during play, and beautiful enough that we don’t mind it living permanently on the table.
There is a reason this has become one of our best-selling little books.
En Español (see details below)
Our Spanish edition was translated by Adriana “Nanis” Treviño of MTY Mahjong Club in Monterrey, Mexico, with the vocabulary of the game carefully adapted for Spanish-speaking players.

Very easy to understand and simple
We love this guide- so convenient and easy to understand. It small enough to keep right by the table in case questions arise! Can’t recommend this guide enough!
Thank you. It is excellent! It’s the perfect overview of Mahjong as you are learn. A great reference for various questions like; why does my set have to many tiles to or quick review before playing after being away from the game for a bit. The spiral makes for easy flipping and the size slides easily into your Mahjong tile bag.
I gave it to my friend whom I’m teaching to skim and ask questions for the next time we get together.
Made things SO much more clear!! Really helpful to have this book with me the first 12-15x I played, and with me in my beginning mahjong class. I would highly recommend this to any player just beginning!
A super helpful resource and beautifully illustrated
